Objectives

GOAL:

Complete a pilot study for estimating the risks and rapid detection of IAS in the county of Constanta, considered to be an area of maximal risk in Romania, to increase the capacity to detect and respond rapidly to the alien species. To achieve this goal, three major objectives were established together with the activities required:


2007

OBJECTIVE 1 To develop and validate techniques, methods and programs for monitoring high risk areas in the county of Constanta, for alien species with high invasive potential. (Objective accomplished)

Activity 1.1 Desk study.


2008

OBJECTIVE 1 To develop and validate techniques, methods and programs for monitoring high risk areas in the county of Constanta, for alien species with high invasive potential. (Objective accomplished)

Activity 1.1 Desk study.

Activity 1.2 Identification and delineation of high risk areas and of priority taxonomic groups of potential IAS.

Activity 1.3 Inventory and mapping of existing alien species within and around the high risk areas.

Activity 1.4 Establish the frequency required for sampling in the high risk areas, taking into account the particularities of the IAS targeted.

Activity 1.5 Test and validate the techniques and methods of monitoring selected.

OBJECTIVE 2 The study of selected IAS from terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats to elucidate their potential impact, elaborate predictive models and propose and test methods for eradication and control. (Objective accomplished)

Activity 2.1 Field and laboratory studies to establish the environmental requirements of the cirriped crustacean Balanus improvisus.

Activity 2.2 Field and laboratory studies to establish the environmental requirements of the bivalve Corbicula fluminea

Activity 2.3 Field and laboratory studies to establish the environmental requirements of the acacia tree Amorpha fruticosa and the gracilariid moth Cameraria ohridella.

OBIECTIVE 3 Dissemination of the results of the project, educate and raise awareness among stakeholders involved in the accidental and deliberate introduction of IAS. (Objective accomplished)

Activity 3.4 Create a web site.

Activity 3.1 Workshop organized at the end of the proposal with stakeholders and decision makers.

Activity 3.2 Prepare and publish good practice guides for staff working in customs, port, airport and border posts.

Activity 3.3 Prepare a list of the most dangerous IAS together with an identification guide.

Activity 3.4 Create a web site.
